Amara Honors Gullah Geechee Ancestry at Cultural Event in St. Augustine, FL

What happens when a time-traveling, museum-loving, history-exploring girl named Amara meets the rich legacy of the Gullah Geechee people?

Magic. Pure magic.

This past weekend, Amara's Adventures was proudly featured at a cultural event honoring the vibrant traditions and powerful resilience of the Gullah Geechee community. And at the heart of this special moment was Nola D Oracle—cultural filmmaker, author, and founder of Diaspora Whispers Books—continuing her mission to spark curiosity and deepen cultural pride among young readers.

Why the Gullah People Matter to Amara’s Journey

For Nola D Oracle, Amara’s Adventures was never just a book. It’s a movement. A story engine designed to transport children into worlds rich with history, strength, and legacy. Featuring Amara at a Gullah Geechee event was a full-circle moment—a living, breathing example of what happens when storytelling becomes a tool for connection.

The Gullah people—descendants of enslaved Africans who lived in the coastal regions of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida—hold one of the most intact African cultures in the United States. Their language, oral traditions, crafts, spirituality, and close-knit communities have deeply influenced African American history and identity. To see Amara—an 11-year-old fictional explorer inspired by real-world African American trailblazers—be embraced in this space was a powerful reminder: representation and reclamation matter.

A Story That Resonates Across Generations

As kids flipped through the pages of Amara’s Adventures: A Trip to the African American Museums in Jacksonville, Florida, elders nodded with pride. Parents smiled, knowing their children were engaging with stories that reflect their heritage.
It’s not just about teaching our children history. It’s about helping them understand they are history in the making.
And the best part? Young readers started to ask deeper questions—about their own roots, about the people featured in Amara’s story, and even about how they could start writing their own stories.

Diaspora Whispers in Action

Diaspora Whispers Books Publishing Company isn’t just putting books on shelves. It’s planting seeds—of literacy, environmental responsibility, and cultural legacy. As always, 10% of proceeds from Amara’s Adventures goes toward tree-planting initiatives. So every book purchased is both a learning tool and a gift to the planet.

What's Next for Amara?

If this Gullah Geechee celebration was any indication, Amara’s journey is just getting started. Her next adventures may explore even more cultures! And with Nola D Oracle at the helm, there’s no limit to where this brave little explorer might go next.
